John E. Jenkins was born in Cleveland, Ohio November 17,1846 and departed this life at his home in Effingham, March 8,1917 being 70 years 3 months and 21 days old. He lived with his parents until he grew to manhood and moved to Illinois with them in 1869.
He was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Rawlins in Toledo, Ill. on July 15,1869. To this union was born 12 children 4 of whom preceded him to the grave while they were in infancy. He leaves to mourn their loss, eight children and one brother, Perry Jenkins of Lerna, Ill., 21 grand children 2 great grandchildren. The children who survive him are Emery of Lerna, Ill., Frank of Funkhouser, Mrs. Mary Orr, Mrs. Chas. Warner, Mrs. Edith Yocum, Charley, Lewis, and Bennie of Effingham.
In his early life he united with the United Brethren church at Mullin's school house in Cumberland county and had always led a consistent Christian life, every Sunday he loved to while away hours reading from the Old Book, the Bible, He always had family worship each day. He was a kind neighbor, a good husband and it a rule of his life to never say ill of any one and if he could not say a good word he held his peace. Such in brief is the history of a good man whose memory we respect today.
