PLUNGES 70 FEET
TO CEMENT FLOOR

Patrick Hogan Dies Soon After
Terrible Fall at Solay
Proccess Co.'s Plant

SUDDEN DIZZINESS HURLS
HIM FROM HIGH STAIRWAY

Sad Tragedy Occurs on First Day
at Work After Long Search
For Employment

"I would rther stay up here
without a drink of water than take
a chance of going down there after
one."
A few minutes after he made this
announcement, Patrick Hogan, a
machinist's helper, became suddenly
dizzy yesterday afternoon and fell
headlong from a stairway he was
helping to build at the plant of
the Solvay Process Co., to a cement
floor, 70 feet below. He died an
hour later in the Solvay hospital.
After vainly searching for work
for a month, Hogan secured a job
at the Delray plant yesterday morn-
ing. He was assigned to assist one
of the machinists in building a new
steel stairway in the "dense" plant.
A few minutes after 1 o'clock,
Hogan was talking with J. Yensen,
a fellow laborer, near the top of
the stairway. Both were sitting on
the stairs waiting to be assigned to
their work for the afternoon. Hogan
remarked that he was thirsty and
his companion suggested that he re-
turn down stairs and get it.
While the two men were talking
Hogan looked down at the floor.
With two short gasps the man
pitched forward from his seat. In
falling, Hogan's body struck three
landings of the stairway and final-
ly the floor. He was picked up
unconscious and hurried to the Sol-
vay hospital, where an examination
disclosed his skull had been frac-
tured and several hones in his body
were broken. Without regaining
consciousness, Hogan died at 2
o'clock. Hogan lived at 94 Reeder
street, was 22 years old and had
been married three years.
